Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
