One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company was prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company

The recent development deepens the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes and Future Plans

The founder stated how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, after decades of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
