Cameroonian Opposition Figure Faces Legal Proceedings Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon show outrage that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over accusations that he provoked "aggressive electoral rallies".

At least 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and protesters since the presidential election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he emerged victorious, a statement disputed by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have concerned the world leaders, with the UN, AU and European Union calling for restraint.

Official's Accusations

Earlier this week, Nji charged the opposition figure of organising what he described as "unlawful" protests resulting in the loss of lives, and also condemned him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He noted that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the October 12 presidential election with a majority of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the authorities' move to try him, but he had earlier declared that he would not accept a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he said that armed men opened fire on demonstrators gathered near his house in Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.

Investigation Launched

Earlier this week, the interior minister revealed that an investigation would be started into unrest before and after the announcement of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals died," he commented, without offering a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that a number of members of the police and military also received serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

Even though the interior minister maintained the state of affairs nationwide was now under control, demonstrators remain active in some parts of the nation, especially in urban centers, where protesters mounted barricades on that day, and ignited rubber on the streets.

Observers alert that the post-electoral violence could lead the nation into a governmental instability.
