Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
