Daughter of Ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Allegations as Court Case Commences
The child of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she published on digital networks in the past during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her father.
A period of chaos in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, caused at least 300 individuals deceased and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this violence and faces charges of encouragement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
History of the Proceedings
The protests were focused in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and followed the former president's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.
She has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer earlier calling the state's case as weak.
She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political disputes with her parent after he founded his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
Backing and Court Representation
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial harassment" against the former president and his kin.
A small number of backers from her political organization, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other group representatives attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has maintained that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and lacks compelling proof for a criminal finding.
