Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new initialism emerged a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals such as child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials disputes these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what unity looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
