International Bodies and the UK Decry ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.
The sentencing of media publisher Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Rights groups and international powers have described the legal verdicts politically motivated.
International Outcry and Calls for Release
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the lengthy imprisonment is effectively a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She characterized the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute intended to muzzle those who speak out against China. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and release him to his family.
“This verdict illustrates how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s security law are subject to interpretation in contravention of universal rights standards,” stated top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “condemns” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the introduction of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was ultimately convicted on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were based on the controversial security law.
Family Concerns
The activist's child, Sebastien, expressed that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. His international counsel described him the “planet's most prominent detainee” behind bars at present.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, yet it provided some “solace” that the judicial farce had concluded.
Political Repercussions
The verdict has complicated diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in a conversation with President Xi Jinping recently. Nevertheless, any potential progress in securing his freedom is not known.
Sebastien Lai asked the point of improved bilateral relations while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Government Reactions
On the other hand, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing endorsed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee claimed the verdict showed that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “mastermind” behind past unrest and maintained the trial had been “justified and legal.” He urged other nations not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
A Symbolic Case
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders labeled Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “bleak moment for those who value a liberty of the press.”
With a near 100% rate of guilty verdicts on national security offences, Lai’s severe sentence is viewed as the most severe yet imposed under the disputed law.
