Kalimuendo Fires as Forest Earn Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the ground as Forest supporters celebrated another success against their Swedish opponents. Much has transpired since Francis's decisive header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but the club still hold dear those memories. Equally, significant shifts have occurred in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Win
For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after ending sixth in their home competition – represented a third straight triumph across all competitions and added to the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of the club's European Cup success in spirit, the game itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or nerves.
It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive clash between the sides since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
Forest fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were also present. The two clubs enjoyed a meal together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and company were given a rousing welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically superb display was shown in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” displayed one part of a large tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough watching events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Outset
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was strong, too. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an attempt off target inside two minutes and built a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defence led by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who swept home with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since March.
Second Strike Confirms Control
The scorer was implicated in the team's next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards Yates at the back post.
Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected wide off Malmö back Rösler, son of ex- Man City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had previously had a powerful header smartly saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Opponent's Struggles
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they struggled to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the side that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also scored three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the second half.
Smooth Evening for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently introduced teenage defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of producing of thrills, too.
