Ken Burns has become more than a historical storyteller; he is a brand, a one-man industrial complex. When he has documentary series premiering on the television, everybody wants a part of him.

Burns and his collaborators plus scripting partner Geoffrey Ward drew upon numerous historical volumes and primary source materials. I got so angry when somebody said, ‘So why the celebrities?’. I explained, ‘These are artists.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they animate historical material.”

Nevertheless, no contemporary observers remain, photography and newsreels compelled the production to rely extensively on historical documents, weaving together individual perspectives of multiple revolutionary participants. Burns also wanted {to rediscover the
