Los Angeles Faces Historic High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that caused flooding across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now confronting unseasonably hot weather for this time of year.
All-Time High Readings
During the day Friday, the thermometer climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on official maps for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities stated that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in mercury arrives just after a powerful winter storm that struck the area last week. That event delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, causing flash flood warnings for many residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also caused a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions is expected. Readings were expected to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by Friday night.
Additional areas that reached the 90-degree mark featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to see the high eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can expect weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the following week.
