Prisons Won't Be Fixed Overnight, Government Official Says, as Police Hunt For Two Men Incorrectly Freed
Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "total mess," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he referenced comments made by David Lammy after a previous inmate discharge, saying that the minister would establish more robust checks.
"It took six days for the corrections department supposedly to even become aware this has happened" and notify the police, the shadow official explains, "who are now a week behind in the search to locate him."
The shadow minister condemns the minister's performance during recent parliamentary questions and accuses him of a "total failure in responsibility."
Addressing incorrect inmate discharges in broader terms, the spokesperson underlines that "every single mistaken discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the former administration, but claims the figure "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating more prisons to be built, he continues: "What the British people expect now are proper safeguards implemented."
"This represents a specific bureaucratic error by the justice department overseen by David Lammy," Jenrick says.
