For years, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to craft a made-to-measure version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

One recent example is a television show launched last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with many contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.
