The English seamer further complicated the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the playing area during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test against Australia.
The pace bowler experienced discomfort in his left hamstring post-delivery in his spell on Saturday.
The England team stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and required time on the sidelines in order to be assessed "during the day".
The final Test of the tour beginning on 4 January begins this coming Sunday.
The English side has been without key quicks Mark Wood due to knee trouble and another paceman because of a side injury on the current trip.
Matthew Fisher was added to the party to provide backup.
His form was underwhelming early in the series, claiming a mere three wickets.
He was left out of the third Test, only to be brought back for the fourth Test to fill the void.
The county bowler performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 with the bat among just a trio of teammates to get into double digits.
Following a brief spell late on the first day, he resumed on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.
Yet, on the final ball of that over, he bowled a change of pace to the batsman and promptly felt his left hamstring.
