Based on fresh findings, government ministers met with delegates from the oil and gas sector over 500 times during their opening year in government – representing twice every weekday.

Marked Uptick Compared to Previous Administration

The study showed that oil industry representatives were participating in 48% more government meetings under the present administration's opening year versus the year before.

Ministers supported the meetings, stating that representatives engaged with a diverse array of delegates from "power industry, worker groups and civil society to drive forward our clean energy leading initiative".

However, the discoveries have raised concern among critics about the degree of the oil and gas sector's leverage over officials at a time when officials are striving to decrease expenses and shift to a environmentally friendly energy infrastructure.

The analysis, which is based on the official published record of government discussions, additionally revealed:

• Officials at the Net Zero Ministry met with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with corporate delegates present at almost a quarter of discussions.

• The climate official met with petroleum sector advocates 250 times – with a third of all his meetings featuring corporate delegates.

• In the same period ministry officials held meetings with labor organization delegates 61 times.

• Multiple prominent oil corporations met with representatives 100 times combined.

• Fossil fuel lobbyists attended almost every government meeting about the energy profits levy, a temporary charge on the "extraordinary profits" of marine oil and gas companies.

An ecological representative commented: "Instead of considering scientists, communities suffering from environmental disasters, or guardians eager to guarantee a safe future for their children and grandchildren, this government is emphasizing lobbyists and earnings for oil and gas giants."

Official Denial

The government maintained the results were "deceptive", saying many of the companies included also had clean energy investments and that such matters were often the primary subject of the meetings.

"Our main focus is a fair, systematic and successful shift in the offshore region in line with our ecological and statutory obligations, and we are working with the field to protect present and coming generations of decent work."

Multiple prominent fossil fuel corporations have been condemned for slashing their environmental funding in recent years amid a worldwide opposition against ecological initiatives.

A campaigns manager from an environmental law organization remarked: "Officials vowed a government of service, but that doesn't mean submitting to businesses profiting out of environmental crisis. It's time to cease favoring polluters and put people first."
