The Derry Prequel Series Releases Episode Two Sooner Than Planned on HBO's Digital Service

Excitement is building for the Stephen King adaptation the Derry series, already receiving positive feedback and weaving in themes from additional King stories. Following the premiere, the broadcaster announced that the second installment will debut sooner than expected, scheduled ideally for October 31st.

Schedule Change Information

Starting on the last day of October at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the next part of the Derry prequel will make its debut on HBO's online platform, prior to its traditional TV airing. The remaining installments of the show's first season will continue to air on the weekend on HBO and HBO Max, leading up to the final episode on Sunday, December 14.

Storyline Summary

Based in Stephen King’s It universe, the new series draws from the original story while enlarging the setting realized by the It movie director in It and It Chapter Two. The original It centered on adolescents confronting unimaginable horrors, making it appropriate that the series continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the premiere episode of HBO’s Welcome to Derry shows it intended to escalate the fear, providing even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and creating a harsh vibe for the rest of the season.

Premise and Ideas

Located in the early '60s, the program presents a different group of adults and children living in a seemingly idyllic town masking a evil heart. Derry operates on a cruel, recurring cycle—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a terrifying being returns every 27 years. While Welcome to Derry might seem like it leans too heavily to the films on the surface, what distinguishes the digital program is its dual perspective—unfolding through the eyes of both children and adults concurrently. Children stay particularly vulnerable to the monster's horror, but older characters aren’t spared dealing with their own nightmares born from local discrimination and hidden paranormal elements.

The series airs on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
