The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
