The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Squad

England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.

The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also bolstering the lower order.

But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
