What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
